Item #: MODEL-COLUMBIA
1/400 Space Shuttle "Columbia" w/SRB (STS-1) - Memorable Missions of Space Shuttle 1:400 scale: Shuttle approximately 3.5 inches tall; Rocket Boosters apx 6 inches tall. New for 2012! Dragon's 1:400 scale Space Shuttle Columbia has a diecast metal fuselage with plastic wings, rudder and cargo bay doors. Individual tile details surround the windscreen and are present on each of the Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) pods. The main engine and OMS exhaust nozzles have been separately applied. Launch Configuration releases come with an external tank and the solid rocket boosters that feature separately applied motor nozzle extension. The Columbia is distinguished as being the first space-worthy craft in the Space Shuttle series. After construction began in 1975, it completed the first STS-1 flight in April 1981. The Columbia completed 27 missions for a total of 300.74 days in space before disaster struck on its 28th flight. On 1 February 2003, the craft was destroyed during re-entry, and its seven crewmembers perished. The tragedy was due to a hole punched in the leading edge of a wing when it took off 16 days earlier. A subsequent investigation decided to retire the Space Shuttle fleet in favor of the Constellation program.
