Expedition 14 Mission Sticker
Introducing the International Space Station's Expedition 14 crew emblem. The Roman numeral XIV suspended above the Earth against the black background of space symbolizes the 14th long-duration mission to the outpost. The five stars honor the astronauts and cosmonauts of missions Apollo 1, Soyuz 1, Soyuz 11, Challenger, and Columbia, who gave their lives in the pursuit of knowledge and discovery.A veteran crew will fly aboard the International Space Station this fall and winter into 2007. They will work to expand the complex now that three crew members are aboard once again. Making his fourth flight into space, NASA astronaut and Navy Capt. Michael Lopez-Alegria , 45, will command Expedition 14, the 14th long-duration mission to the station, and serve as the NASA science officer. Russian Cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin, 46, will serve as Flight Engineer and Soyuz Commander for launch, landing and on-orbit operations. The two astronauts' mission to the station is planned for six months.Lopez-Alegria and Tyurin will be joined late this year by NASA astronaut and Navy Cmdr. Sunita (Suni) Williams, 41, who will make her first flight into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on the STS-116 mission to join Expedition 14 in progress. She will replace European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Reiter as the third expedition crew member on the station for her six-month mission. Also, American businesswoman Anousheh Ansari will fly with the Expedition 14 crew to the International Space Station as a spaceflight participant. She will spend nine days on the station under a commercial agreement with the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and will return to Earth with the Expedition 13 crew.
