APOLLO 8 Thermal Foil 3 1/2”x 6 1/4” Lucite Display Flown Foil is From the Jerald B. Wilken Space Collection, Limited Edition #001 of 10. APOLLO 8 Encapsulated Thermal Foil Display Includes: Flown Thermal Foil piece 1 1/8"x 1" Approximately from Command Module CM/103 the first manned spacecraft to orbit the moon in custom Lucite display 3 1/2" X 6 1/4" X 1 1/8” Thick. Thermal Shielding Foil: This aluminum foil was adhered with Dow Corning RTV 560 and was externally applied to the Apollo Aft, Forward and Main sub structures to provide thermal protection to the crew compartment and heat sensitive components. This piece of foil came from the AFT compartment. In the vacuum of space, heat transfer is only by radiation, so a radiant barrier is much more effective than it is on earth, where heat transfer can still occur via convection and conduction. Certification of Authenticity from the Wilken family will accompany item. Flown Foils are guaranteed genuine and collected by Jerald B. Wilken and offered by the Wilken Family. Jerry Wilken worked for Space Division of NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. Starting in 1962 as an Associate Test Engineer and from 1967 to 1969 was assigned as test conductor for Apollo Post Flight Operations.
