Apollo Program

The Apollo Program - Between 1969 and 1972, 16 NASA astronauts walked on the surface of the Moon. Apollo era astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Alan Shepard, and Gene Cernan landed on the Moon, conducted experiments, took photos and collected lunar soil samples for return to Earth.

Enormous Saturn V rockets lifted the Apollo capsules into space for the three-day trip to the Moon. Two joined vehicles entered lunar orbit -- the Apollo Command Module and the Lunar Lander. The command module remained in orbit with one astronaut aboard, while the lunar lander carried two astronauts to the Moon's surface.
