Another superb set from LEGO, this is an excellent set and one that should receive an enthusiastic welcome from little space enthusiasts everywhere!
The rocket itself, standing over 14 inches tall when constructed, is the obvious highlight and will no doubt be blasting into orbit in many a living room around the country, but children can also enjoy the detailing in the launch platform and tower, the control center and the four included minifigures.
The launch platform is especially interesting, featuring a locking mechanism to hold the rocket in place for launch and a working elevator to lift the astronaut into his or her (male and female astronauts are included) cockpit.
A fueling hose swings into position to top up the rocket’s tanks, while a countdown clock shows the time remaining until blast-off.
More possibilities are opened up by the mechanic’s vehicle, in which he can whizz around making sure everything is going to plan, and the control center is a beautifully detailed hub of activity, complete with computer monitors and a giant red phone.
We found the launch tower to be surprisingly robust given its rather delicate appearance – it locks together cleverly to ensure rigidity and remained intact for several weeks during our trials.
Appeal was strong across a wide age range, with five-year-olds and nine-year-olds playing happily alongside each other, and there’s enough to do here to keep several children happy at once (although it’s inevitable that everyone will want their turn with the rocket).
