Collectible Patches by Artist Tim Gagnon
Celebrating '50 Years of Human Space Exploration' Commemorative Patch
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HUMAN SPACE EXPLORATION
This is a new patch designed by Tim Gagnon, celebrating the achievement that sparked the imagination of people everywhere. In 1961 two countries began what came to be known as the Space Race - the USSR and the USA. Its goal was to showcase to the world the technical prowess of each country. The results of the Space Race were advances in science, medicine, engineering and technology that benefitted the entire world. Its focus is the outline of a human in a spacesuit, arms outstretched as if to say "look what we have done." The globe and laurel wreath are borrowed from the United Nations Emblem to illustrate what the exploration of space has been done to promote the peaceful benefit to humanity. The three larger stars represent the three nations that have launched people into space. The other 29 stars represent the nationalities of the 500 people who have traveled into orbit from every continent on Earth.
